About Us

Radio Sport National is the name given to our network of racing and sport radio stations across the state of Victoria in the south-east of Australia, also reaching into Tasmania through Tote Sport Radio, and into Canberra through Radio ACTTAB.

The network has a long history. Radio Sport National's predecessor, Sport 927, grew out of Melbourne's oldest commercial radio station, 3UZ Pty Ltd, which first broadcast in March 1925. 3UZ itself has a long and glorious past, and has a fond place in the hearts of the people of Melbourne. Through the decades and with highly-successful broadcast formats it has met the changing tastes and interests of the community. In the past, the people of Melbourne have been entertained and informed with: great singers and entertainers of the 1920's and 1930's; all the news of wars, triumphs and disasters; classic radio serials and quiz shows; coverage of most of the greatest football Grand Finals and Melbourne Cups; and many of the greatest personalities in the history of Australian radio including Graham Kennedy, Bert Newton, Tony Barber and John Blackman.

In 1986, the Victorian thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing codes purchased 3UZ. Race broadcasts were re-introduced in 1988, and since that time, the station has steadily developed and refined its coverage to the extent that it now has a pivotal role in promoting both the racing industry and wagering. In late 1996, the station changed its name to Radio Sport 927 to reflect its place as the first general sport and racing format broadcast on Australian radio. Over time, the station's owners acquired many AM and FM broadcast licences across the state of Victoria, establishing a network with almost statewide coverage. We also established affiliations with racing and sports broadcasters in Tasmania and the ACT. In January 2011, in acknowledgement of our wider role in Australian sports broadcasting, we became Radio Sport National.

Now, in addition to providing Australia's premier racing coverage, Radio Sport National covers all major sports to satisfy the insatiable needs of our fanatical sports audience. It's said that the people of Australia, especially Victoria, have a passion for sport unmatched anywhere else in the world. That's why they have a radio network dedicated to providing the best and most comprehensive sports coverage.

Our program hosts and correspondents are superbly qualified to present all the major sports all day, every day of the year. That's with : regular score updates and reports; discussion and analysis of all major topical sports issues; interviews with top overseas and Australian sports personalities; and you can be sure that our sports coverage will be entertaining, colourful, controversial and informative. Then there's the racing. At present, the network broadcasts around 6,000 TAB thoroughbred, harness and greyhound meetings nationwide on an annual basis. The race broadcasts are complemented by a plethora of analytical racing programs all designed to help punters pick winners.

Radio Sport National provides a superb racing coverage all year round, it steps into overdrive at Spring Carnival time to accommodate the enormous interest in Australia's no.1 sporting and social event. At Carnival time, Radio Sport National's already substantial audience increases with many seasonal racing enthusiasts tuning in to get the valuable wagering information that only we can offer.
